Joseph Pichanick was born on 3 January 1915 in Bulawayo, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), In 1920 the family left Rhodesia for England on board the "Edinburgh Castle", arriving in Southampton on the 2nd Feb 1920.  The family stayed at 4 Gloucester Terrace, Cheetham Hill Road, Manchester (More Research).

The entire family then returned to Rhodesia via Cape Town on board the SS Barrabool" arriving on the 4th May 1922.

He attended Prince Edward School, Salisbury and then University in Cape Town from 1932-1936 and qualified as B.A., L.L.B. Like many in Rhodesia he served in the Southern Rhodesia Territorial Force and during the Second World War in East Africa he must have done full time service as he qualified for the War Medal (if it had been part time it would have been the Southern Rhodesia Service Medal) and the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal, which was awarded in 1/02/1946. He was discharged on 26 January 1946.In 1952 he was a working as a book seller and provider of stationary and lived at 26 Harvey Brown Avenue, Salisbury.

Efficiency Medal: Rhodesia Gazette 1st Nov 1946

 

Alastair Charles McLean served during World War II as a member of the Southern Rhodesia Territorial Force (SRTF). The award of his Africa Star is noted in the Southern Rhodesia War Diary 1939-45, Vol, 2, page 413 (TNA WO333/2). He also qualified for the Territorial Efficiency Medal with bar Southern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia Gazette 1st November 1946.

Old Miltonian and is one of those listed in their yearbook as having joined His Majesty's Forces for WWII.
 
He enlisted in the BSAP Reserve (date unknown) and qualified for the award of the Special Constabulary Medal (date unknown). This is not unusual as it is known that there is a gap in the medal roll from 1960-1965 of members who were awarded this medal. Later he was awarded a RhGSM (Supplement to BSAP Reserve Force Orders, 15th Schedule, 8 May 1975, Page 9) and a Police Reserve Long Service Medal (The Rhodesia Government Gazette, 31 October 1975, Vol LIII, No 49, Page 1264)
