Army Emergency Reserve (1952-67)

Abbreviation: EM(AER)

In 1952 the Supplementary Reserve, who previously qualified for the EM(M), was renamed the Army Emergency Reserve.

The Army Emergency Reserve was still made up of reservists who had skills in their civilian life that would be of use to the Army in times of emergency.

To reflect the change of name the Efficiency Medal Army Emergency Reserve was created by Royal Warrant dated 1st September 1953. This new medal also had a new ribbon of Dark Blue and three vertical stripes of yellow at the centre.

A total of around 1300 medals were awarded, all to Corps, ranging in number from 589 to the  Royal Engineers and only 1 to the Woman's Royal Army Corps.

It is possible to find groups that contain an EM(T) and an EM(AER) where the recipient had been in the Territorial Army and earned an EM(T) then continued to serve and would have been entitled to a clasp or Clasps to that medals, but as the unit they were serving with, or they had transferred to was now part of the Army Emergency Reserve, they became entitled to the EM(AER).

In 1967 the Army Emergency Reserve and the Territorial Army were merged to form the Territorial & Army Volunteer Reserve and The EM(AER) was discontinued and replaced by the EM(TAVR).

Members of the Army Emergency Reserve or the Territorial Army who continued to serve after the  change to the Territorial Army and Volunteer Reserve (TAVR) and had earned their either an EM(T) or an EM(AER) who then completed another 6 years of service were awarded the clasp to the respective medal, if they then completed a further 6 years in the TAVR they then became eligible for the EM(TAVR) and the award of the last clasp awarded was cancelled in Army Orders and the EM(TAVR) medal was awarded. An example of this can be found below.
